Residential Access Control

Wireless Keypads

Linear MDKP

Wireless keypads such as this one from Linear are a great way to provide access without the need to ditch and lay in wires back to the operator. This particular one is powered by a 9-volt battery and features an all metal housing. Battery replacement is simple, a key opens the unit from the bottom and a new 9v battery is just snapped in place.

While a reciever must also be installed at the operator to complete the installation, ease of changing the battery is a real plus.

Liftmaster KPW250

For those with a Liftmaster operator, they have a wireless keypad or two which work with them without the need for an additional receiver. Changing the batteries is a bit more challenging however as the back must be removed with a small screwdriver to access the batteries.

Two models are available. One has a plastic housing and stores five codes while the other (shown) has a metal houlsing and stores 250 individual codes. These are the least expensive solutions to having a keypd for access with a retail price around $250.

Wired Keypads

DoorKing 1506-086 Keypad

There are a number of simple keypads available. We don't recommend the inexpensive plastic ones under $100 despite them seeming to hold up better than expected. In the past we've most often installed ones made by Linear but some customers complained about having to first hit a key to turn on the small light shining down on the keys.

Now, our deluxe recomendation are for those made by DoorKing. The one shown not only has keys which light up individually but can hold up to 1000 codes making it usable for HOA's and apartment etc. needing many codes. This is sort of the top of the line for such keypads and has a stainless steel faceplate. It retails a bit over $900, but other models are half the price having fewer codes and a black metal faceplate.

Where the cost really increases is in the installation. Wires must run from the keypad back to the operator and so ditching (often 2' deep) wire and and conduit is required. The big advantage is that being powered by wire they can remain lighted, and the hassle of battery changing is elliminated.

Keypads w/ Telephone Access

Door King 1812 series

These seem to be the most common telephone access systems in our area ...and for good reason: They work.

They come in a variety of models with some post mounted and other wall mounted and with different faceplates such as stainless steel. The version they call the 'Plus' has better audio and is compatible with the digital phone line of today.

The are also available with a camera, which requires a cable back to the home where it can be used with a television monitor. Programming can also be done at the home over the phone. They have all the bells and whistles you might imagine or want for convinence. The 'Access Plus' is available for those with a limited number of building on the property as well.

They can be used like an intercom wired directly to the home, or use a shared line with home or have a diedicated line for them with their own dedicated phone number.

Keypads w/ Cellphone Access

Cellgate W450, Watchman.

We've had very good luck with Cellgate products and are impressed with their technicial in dealing with folks getting things set up.

There is no doubt that this is the deluxe wat to go. It offers not just two way speech with folks at the gate but video of them as well with the built in video camera.

Again as with other keypads there are mounting options, the most common way is on a post.

The cell access is covered by the company and monthy fees are in the $40 - $50 range.
