Gate Safety Devices – FAQ (Photo Eyes, Edges, Loops)

Safety devices prevent injury and property damage. Modern gate systems are expected to detect obstructions and protect people, pets, and vehicles.

Core safety devices

What are photo eyes and what do they do?

Photo eyes are beam sensors. If the beam is broken, the operator won’t close (or will reverse), depending on wiring/settings.

What is a safety edge?

A safety edge is a compressible strip that senses contact and signals the operator to stop/reverse—helpful at pinch points.

Why does my gate refuse to close when nothing is there?
  • Photo eye blocked/misaligned or sun/glare.
  • Loose wiring or water intrusion.
  • Edge stuck “active” or transmitter/battery failing.

UL 325 (plain-English)

What is UL 325 in simple terms?

It’s the safety standard that drives how operators should behave with obstruction detection and safety devices.

How many safety devices do I need?

It depends on the gate type and site. The goal is to reduce risks at pinch points and in the travel path.

Vehicle safety

What’s a loop detector and when should I use one?

A loop detector uses a wire loop in the driveway to sense vehicles.

  • Safety loop: prevents closing on a vehicle.
  • Free-exit loop: opens when a vehicle approaches from inside.
Can a loop be added later?

Usually yes, but it requires cutting/slotting the driveway or planning a conduit path.
