Access Control – FAQ (Keypads, Remotes, Intercoms, Phone Access)
Access control is how you command the gate: keypad codes, remotes, intercoms, phone/app access, vehicle loops, or a combination.
Everyday access
What’s the difference between a keypad and a remote?
Remote is quick and simple. Keypad is great for guests and deliveries. Many systems use both.
Can I have multiple codes for different people?
Yes—one of the main advantages of keypad/controller-based systems.
Can I open the gate with my phone?
Yes. Options include app-based controllers (internet/cellular), phone call/dial-to-open (cellular), or intercoms that call your phone.
Intercoms
What does an intercom do?
A visitor calls you from the gate; you decide whether to open. Some systems support video.
Do intercoms need internet?
Not always. Some use cellular; some use local wiring; some use internet. Reliability is the priority.
Free exit
What’s the safest way to do free exit?
Usually a properly placed vehicle loop plus safety sensors to prevent closing on vehicles.
Common problems
My keypad works but the gate doesn’t move—why?
- Operator is in a fault state.
- Wiring from keypad to operator input is loose/broken.
- Input type/programming mismatch.
